Flood events due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall and in coastal regions and droughts regularly lead to health disasters in Cameroon. The project aims to develop concrete solutions for the pilot areas of Douala, Yaoundé and Soa.
Douala: The port city at the mouth of the Wouri River is the economic capital of Cameroon. With a population of 3.5 million (2019) and the geographical situation in the cameroonian estuary, particularly prolonged riverandcoastalflooding, and flooding due to heavyrainfall represent potential disaster scenarios for the city.
Yaoundé: The political capital of Cameroon is the country's most populous city with 3.8 million inhabitants (2019). The hilly topography favours high flow speeds and water depths of the running water during flood events as a result of heavyrainfall.
Soa: The peri-urban settlement of Soa, north-east of Yaoundé, has no major surface water bodies, making the municipality particularly vulnerable to a drought disaster scenario. At the same time, increase flooding due to heavyrainfall poses challenges for the population.
